Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic глаголъ (glagolŭ) / ⰳⰾⰰⰳⱁⰾⱏ (glagolŭ), from Proto-Slavic *golgolъ (“speech, word”). Displaced the native Russian *гологол (*gologol), still found in голого́лить (gologólitʹ).
